Art and Culture in Wollongong: Galleries, Music and the Illawarra Scene

Wollongong has a creative scene shaped by the University of Wollongong's arts programs, its working-class industrial heritage and a growing community of Sydney creatives who have relocated to the more affordable Illawarra. The Wollongong Art Gallery on Kembla Street is the flagship public gallery with a strong permanent collection and regular temporary exhibitions. The Wollongong City Gallery is free and runs a varied program. The Nan Tien Temple at Berkeley is one of the most architecturally significant buildings in the region and runs cultural programs including meditation, vegetarian cooking and Buddhist arts events open to the public. The Regent Theatre on Crown Street is a heritage performing arts venue running theatre, comedy and music. The annual Yours & Owls festival at Stuart Park is the Illawarra's largest music festival. The UOW Creative Arts building and its associated exhibitions and performances are open to the public. Several artist-run initiatives operate in converted industrial spaces in the inner suburbs.
