Why Wollongong needs local news

For most of the last century, every Australian city of Wollongong's size supported at least one dedicated newsroom — reporters who sat in on council meetings, walked the streets, and knew the local players by name. Those newsrooms have largely been gutted. National outlets parachute in for the big stories and leave the day-to-day uncovered.

That gap matters. When nobody reports on a council vote, decisions get made without scrutiny. When nobody covers a new development, residents find out only when the bulldozers arrive. When nobody profiles the local charity, the cafe, the small business — the things that make Wollongongfeel like Wollongong — they fade from public attention.

We exist to fill that gap. Every weekday morning we publish what's happening across Wollongong: council, courts, business, sport, property, community. The boring stuff and the important stuff. The kind of journalism a city deserves.

We're not trying to replace the Mercury or the ABC. We're trying to make sure that the everyday rhythms of Wollongong life — the things that don't trend nationally but matter enormously locally — get told.
