Wollongong Suburbs Guide: Finding the Right Neighbourhood

Wollongong's suburbs follow the narrow coastal corridor between the Tasman Sea and the Illawarra Escarpment. North Wollongong sits immediately adjacent to the city and has the best beach access. Thirroul, Austinmer and Bulli are the desirable northern suburbs with a village-style cafe culture and ocean pools, though they carry a price premium. To the south, Fairy Meadow, Corrimal and Towradgi are mid-range suburbs with good bus access to the city. The University of Wollongong sits in Gwynneville, with surrounding suburbs including Keiraville and Mount St Thomas being popular with students and academics. Dapto and Albion Park to the south offer larger homes at lower prices for families. Shellharbour, a separate coastal city about 15 kilometres south, has its own beach precincts and a growing dining scene.
