Cycling in Wollongong: The Gong Ride Route and Coastal Paths

Wollongong and the Illawarra region have a strong cycling culture shaped in part by the annual Gong Ride from Sydney to Wollongong, which draws thousands of participants each November. The coastal cycling route along Lawrence Hargrave Drive from Stanwell Park south through Scarborough and Clifton is one of the most scenic rides in New South Wales, with ocean views and escarpment backdrops. The Wollongong CBD to Port Kembla shared path runs along the coastline and is accessible to recreational riders. The Dharawal State Conservation Area provides mountain biking and trail riding with varying terrain. The Stuart Park foreshore in North Wollongong has a dedicated shared path popular with commuters and morning riders. Hire bikes are available from several outlets. The Illawarra Bike Users Group maintains resources for local cyclists.
