Starting this month, Wollongong City Council is rolling out a fresh schedule of free fitness programs for residents aged 60 and over, giving local seniors a structured, social way to keep active throughout winter. The new roster, announced on Monday, includes weekly group walking sessions, gentle yoga, and aqua aerobics at no charge across a network of city-run spaces.
Demand for accessible exercise options has been surging as the region copes with its ageing population and steady reports of increased lifestyle diseases amongst older Australians. According to the latest council community health profile, one in five Illawarra adults over 65 now lives with at least two chronic conditions. Colder-than-expected winter days and headlines of extreme weather, like June’s record heat in Sydney, have also left many residents seeking safe, supervised places to exercise rather than risking slippery tracks on the Illawarra Escarpment or choppy seas at City Beach.
"We’re hearing regularly from local seniors that structured, group-based exercise boosts their mood and confidence far more than solo gym trips," said a council spokesperson. "By removing the barrier of fees, we’re hoping everyone feels welcome—no matter what suburb they live in." That message appears to be resonating in suburbs such as Fairy Meadow, where council fitness staff say attendance for the walking group at Guest Park has doubled since free registration began on 24 June.
The program’s reach has expanded this year to several prominent local spots. For those who favour the water, free aqua aerobics classes are running three mornings a week at the Lakeside Leisure Centre on Northcliffe Drive in Berkeley. The Coniston Community Centre hosts gentle strength and balance sessions every Friday morning, using the centre’s newly renovated multipurpose room. Outdoor enthusiasts can join guided walking groups at Stuart Park every Wednesday just after sunrise, or join tai chi sessions at the Flagstaff Hill lawns overlooking the Lighthouse.
The council’s website lists 17 different weekly classes rotating between six key venues, including Unanderra Community Centre, Thirroul District Library, and the Botanic Garden’s Education Pavilion on Murphys Avenue. While group sizes vary, most can accommodate up to 25 participants; all classes are led by certified instructors employed by the council’s Healthy Communities team.
While commercial gyms in Wollongong typically charge $12–$20 per casual class, council sessions remain entirely free to over-60s with a city library card or pensioner card. Attendance across all senior fitness programs climbed 38% in the first half of 2026, according to internal council data. As of May, more than 450 residents were attending at least one session each week, up from fewer than 300 last winter.
"The cold snap last week actually brought in quite a few new faces," reported a Healthy Communities coordinator based in Corrimal. Local GPs, including doctors at Keira Street Medical, have also begun referring mobility-impaired patients directly to council programs as an alternative to more expensive private rehab options.
Residents can check class times online or pick up a printed timetable at any Wollongong city library branch. All sessions are drop-in, with no advance booking required. Council staff recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a water bottle. For those hesitant to try out a session alone, volunteers from the Illawarra Senior Citizens Association are stationed at each event to greet newcomers and help with registration.
The current winter timetable runs through September, and the Healthy Communities team is seeking community feedback ahead of its spring refresh. Seniors who attend three or more sessions by August 30 will automatically enter a prize draw for free tickets to a matinee film at the Gala Cinemas on Crown Street.
