Wollongong parents scrambling for school holiday plans can breathe easy, the city's winter events calendar is packed with affordable, family-friendly activities between now and the end of July. At least 14 separate community programs, museum exhibitions and outdoor experiences are running across the Wollongong Local Government Area, with most costing under $20 per child.

Museum magic and dinosaur bones

The Wollongong Art Gallery on Burelli Street is staging 'Tiny Worlds,' a hands-on exhibition running until July 27 that invites children aged 3-12 to build miniature habitats using recycled materials. Entry is free, though the gallery recommends booking 45-minute time slots online to avoid queues. Across town, the Science Centre and Planetarium at the University of Wollongong's Innovation Campus on Squires Way is screening 'Astronaut School' daily at 11am and 2pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children, with a family pass (two adults, two children) for $42.

At the Wollongong Botanic Garden on Murphys Avenue, the 'Dinosaur Discovery Trail' has proven a breakout hit. Forty life-sized dinosaur replicas, including a 12-metre T. rex and a triceratops, are scattered along the garden's paths until July 20. Garden manager Sarah Coates told the Daily Wollongong that weekday mornings are the quietest time, with the trail drawing more than 8,000 visitors in its first week. Entry is free, but parking in the garden's 80-space carpark fills by 10am most days.

Beach walks and library escapes

Winter doesn't mean staying indoors. Wollongong City Council's 'Rockpool Rambles' program returns on Saturday July 12 and 19, led by marine guides at the North Wollongong rockpool on Cliff Road. Sessions run from 10am to 11:30am and cost $5 per child, with all equipment, nets, buckets and identification sheets, provided. The council recommends children wear closed-toe shoes and bring a towel, as splashing is almost guaranteed.

For rain days, the Wollongong City Library on Smith Street has expanded its 'Friday Fun' series. On July 17 and 24, the library will host LEGO brick-building challenges from 10am to noon, followed by 'Storytime Under the Stars', a planetarium show set up inside the library's auditorium, at 1pm. Both events are free, but the planetarium has a capacity of just 60 people, so early arrival is advised. The library also offers a 'Winter Reading Challenge' for kids aged 5-12: any child who reads five books by July 31 can claim a free pass to the Science Centre.

For families with teenagers, the iPlay centre on Flinders Street in Wollongong's CBD is running laser tag sessions every Friday night in July from 6pm to 9pm. Games cost $18 per person and include a soft drink. Booking is essential because sessions sell out by Thursday, the venue's manager confirmed.
