Wollongong City Council approved $14.7 million in funding for upgrades to two major sports venues on July 10.

The decision follows a 28 percent rise in local sports participation recorded in the 2025 Illawarra regional report, which tracked registrations across junior and senior codes. Council documents show the money will address ageing infrastructure that has limited training hours at peak times in summer and winter.

Venues in North Wollongong and Fairy Meadow

Work at WIN Stadium on Harbour Street will include new floodlighting and an expanded indoor warm-up area beside the main field. The same package funds replacement of the timber court floor at the Illawarra Sports Centre on Montague Street in Fairy Meadow, a site used daily by the Illawarra Academy of Sport and community netball leagues. Both projects sit within walking distance of residential streets in North Wollongong and Gwynneville, where clubs report waiting lists for after-school sessions.

Local detail shows the upgrades will also connect to existing paths along the shared cycleway that runs from Stuart Park to the University of Wollongong campus. This link allows teams from the Wollongong Wolves junior program to move between training sites without road crossings during evening hours.

Costs and Timelines

Project papers list $9.2 million for the WIN Stadium lighting and indoor extension, with completion set for March 2027. The remaining $5.5 million covers the Illawarra Sports Centre floor and new storage for equipment used by the South Coast Basketball Association. Council estimates the works will add 1,200 extra training hours per year across both sites, based on current booking data that already shows 92 percent occupancy on weekday evenings.

Residents can view detailed plans at the council customer service centre on Burelli Street from August 4. Online booking systems for the upgraded facilities will open once construction finishes, with priority given to registered local clubs.
