Wollongong recorded $142 million in new private investment commitments during the six months to 30 June 2026, according to figures released by the Illawarra Business Chamber on 8 July.
The figure matters now because national supply-chain reviews and federal defence spending decisions have accelerated capital decisions in coastal cities outside Sydney, and Wollongong sits 80 kilometres south of the harbour with direct rail links and port access already in place.
Two named sites anchor the recent flows. On Crown Street between Keira and Kembla Streets, a 12-storey mixed-use tower approved in April will house co-working floors leased in advance by two logistics firms relocating from Sydney. Further north on Marine Drive in North Wollongong, the University of Wollongong Innovation Campus has secured a $28 million expansion grant for its AI testing facility, with construction slated to begin in September.
Chamber data shows the average commercial rent on Crown Street reached $485 per square metre in the June quarter, up 9 per cent from the same period in 2025. The port handled 4.7 million tonnes of containerised cargo in the year to May, a record that underpins the decision by two shipping agents to open regional offices on Flinders Street this month.
Investors tracking the next phase should watch the September quarterly release from the chamber, due 9 October, which will include updated vacancy rates for the Wollongong central business district. Local firms seeking to expand can contact the chamber’s investment facilitation team before 31 August to access the current round of site-matching assistance tied to the state government’s regional jobs fund.
