Wollongong offers an accessible and distinctive range of family activities shaped by its dramatic escarpment location, beach culture and the presence of a significant Buddhist temple complex that is the largest in the southern hemisphere. Nan Tien Temple on Berkeley Road in Unanderra is the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere and one of the most architecturally extraordinary religious sites in Australia, with meditation programs, a vegetarian restaurant, museum and cultural festival events that are open to visitors of all backgrounds. Science Space on Squires Way is the Illawarra's dedicated science and technology museum with an outdoor science playground, a Hubble Space Telescope presentation and Illawarra Planetarium dome shows. The City Beach and North Wollongong Beach provide safe family swimming with grassed parkland and barbecue areas adjacent. The Sea Cliff Bridge at Clifton, 15 km south, is one of NSW's most spectacular pieces of infrastructure, a curved elevated bridge over the Pacific Ocean cliffs that is accessible for walking and cycling. Minnamurra Rainforest Centre in the Budderoo National Park, 30 km south, has a walking board through temperate rainforest with waterfalls and lyrebird habitat. Robertson's apple orchards in the Southern Highlands, 1 hour inland, have u-pick seasons and farm-gate produce sales.
