Wollongong has one of the most pleasant coastal climates of any Australian city, moderated by both the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west, which creates a rain shadow and a temperature buffer that protects the coastal strip from the extreme heat events that affect Sydney's western suburbs. The coastal climate and the network of ocean pools make Wollongong's summer outdoor swimming options among the best in NSW.
Summer (December to February), Wollongong summers are warm (average January maximums 26 to 27°C on the coast) with moderate humidity and reliable afternoon sea breezes from the south-east. The Illawarra Escarpment receives significantly more summer rainfall than the coastal strip, creating the green vegetation that is the escarpment's defining visual character. The ocean pools (Wollongong City Beach Pool, Fairy Meadow, Thirroul, Austinmer, Bulli) provide the finest summer swimming infrastructure on the NSW coast. The surf beaches (Wollongong Beach, Thirroul, Austinmer) are popular in summer but less crowded than Sydney equivalents.
Autumn (March to May), Wollongong autumn is mild and the beach water remains warm (around 22°C) from the summer heating. The escarpment rainforest turns subtly golden in the deciduous elements of the coastal scrub vegetation. April and May are ideal for the Illawarra Escarpment walks and the Sea Cliff Bridge drive (Lawrence Hargrave Drive between Coalcliff and Clifton), one of NSW's most scenic coastal drives.
Winter (June to August), Wollongong winters are mild (average July maximums 17°C, overnight minimums 8 to 9°C) and similar to Sydney. The escarpment to the west protects the coastal strip from the worst of the cold westerly winds. Winter rainfall at Wollongong is moderate but the escarpment above the city receives higher rainfall from the moist air lifted by the mountain ridge.
Spring (September to November), Wollongong spring is excellent: the Illawarra wildflower season, the surf season revival, and the increasing beach temperatures (ocean temperature around 20°C by November) make spring one of the finest seasons for outdoor activity on the South Coast. The Illawarra Escarpment's spring wattle and native flower display is particularly good in August and September.
