Wollongong City Council has committed $4.8 million to upgrades at three sports sites, with work scheduled to begin in August on the main grandstand at Wollongong Sportsground.

The money comes after local clubs reported a 22 percent rise in weekly training sessions over the past two years, driven by new junior programs and adult social leagues that now run on weeknights at multiple grounds.

The upgrades focus on lighting, drainage and seating at sites that already host Illawarra Rugby League matches and school carnivals.

Works planned at two city venues

At Wollongong Sportsground on Harbour Street the new lighting towers will reach 25 metres and allow night training until 9 pm. A second project will replace the turf and irrigation system at Beaton Park on Gipps Street in Gwynneville, where the Illawarra District Netball Association runs its Saturday competitions. Both jobs are listed in the 2026-27 capital works program approved last month.

Council engineers say the Beaton Park drainage work will cut cancellations after heavy rain from an average of 14 days a season to fewer than four. The lighting at Harbour Street is expected to add 180 extra training hours each winter for the six clubs that share the ground.

Figures released by the council in June show junior football registrations reached 4,872 players this year, up from 3,990 in 2024. Netball numbers at Beaton Park alone grew by 310 players over the same period.

Bookings open next month

Clubs can apply for the new time slots through the council’s online portal from 1 August. Fees remain at $42 per hour for floodlit fields and $28 for unlit grass areas. Residents wanting to watch or volunteer can check the updated fixture lists on the Wollongong Sport website once the August schedule is published.
