The city has its own identity now, it is not merely a satellite of Sydney, but the connectivity makes it a genuine hybrid-work option for those who need to be in the city occasionally.
Choosing a suburb
The beachside suburbs of Fairy Meadow, Thirroul and Austinmer are the lifestyle leaders, good schools, surf clubs and a cafes that Sydney would be proud of. The city centre is improving, with new residential development and a revitalised Wollongong CBD. Further north, the suburbs approaching Helensburgh are the commuter belt.
Cost of living
Wollongong is notably more affordable than Sydney while offering a genuinely comparable lifestyle for many residents. House prices in inner suburbs have risen substantially but remain 30-40% below comparable Sydney addresses.
Jobs
UOW is the largest employer and anchor of the local knowledge economy. The healthcare sector is significant. Construction and professional services have grown. Sydney remains the destination for the highest-paying corporate roles, but many Wollongong residents manage this through hybrid arrangements.
