Wollongong City Council raised parking charges at North Wollongong Beach from 1 July to $3.50 an hour for the first four hours.

The increase follows council budget documents released last month that cited rising maintenance costs for coastal infrastructure and expanded shuttle services from the railway station. Residents in the northern suburbs have already reported longer queues at the automated pay stations on weekends.

Named locations and current charges

At the Wollongong Botanic Garden on the corner of Murphys Avenue and Northfields Avenue, adult entry remains $6 while children under 16 enter free. The garden now requires advance online booking for groups larger than eight between 10am and 2pm on Saturdays. Meanwhile the Blue Mile walking path, which runs from the lighthouse at Flagstaff Point to the southern end of Port Kembla beach, has no entry fee but limited timed parking bays at Stuart Park that cost $2 for 90 minutes.

Public transport data from Transport for NSW shows the 55 bus route from Wollongong station to the Botanic Garden now runs every 25 minutes on weekdays, with a single adult fare of $4.20. The same fare applies on the new winter weekend shuttle that stops at Crown Street Mall and the North Wollongong Beach car park.

Practical steps before travel

Visitors should download the council’s ParkWollongong app to pre-pay for beach parking and check live availability at Stuart Park. Garden bookings close at 8pm the night before a visit. Those arriving by train can use the free Opal transfer at Wollongong station to connect directly to the 55 bus without extra cost within 60 minutes.

Pack layers for the coastal wind, carry exact change for any remaining coin meters and allow an extra 15 minutes for the new security checks at garden entry gates during school-holiday periods.
