The increase comes as more residents and day-trippers seek outdoor options during the cooler months, when indoor venues see lower numbers. Wollongong City Council recorded 62,000 visits to the northern foreshore in July last year, a figure expected to climb again this winter as families look for low-cost activities close to home.
Two key access points sit within easy reach of each other. The path starting at North Wollongong Beach runs south past the lighthouse and connects directly to the 1.8-kilometre loop inside the Wollongong Botanic Garden on Murphys Avenue. Both locations offer free entry, though the garden charges $3 for timed parking after 10am on weekends.
Transport and ticket options
Public transport remains the cheapest route for most locals. The 55 bus from Crown Street Mall to North Wollongong station costs $2.40 with an Opal card, and services run every 20 minutes from 7am. Those driving should note that Fairy Meadow beach car park fills by 9:30am on Saturdays, pushing overflow traffic onto nearby side streets where timed restrictions now apply until 6pm.
A 2025 council transport survey found that 38 percent of weekend visitors to the area arrived by bus or train, up from 29 percent two years earlier. E-scooter hire at the harbour starts at $1 unlock plus $0.35 per minute, with helmets supplied at the kiosk on Cliff Road.
Practical steps before you set out
Check the live bus app the night before, as winter timetable changes begin on July 20 and reduce evening services after 7pm. Pack layers and water, since the exposed cliff sections offer little shelter. Bring small change for the garden's honesty-box donation station if you want to support the native plant propagation program run by the Friends of the Botanic Garden group.
Arrive before 10am to secure parking at either end, or use the free shuttle that loops from Wollongong station to the garden entrance on Saturdays and Sundays until the end of August.
