How the rise of online radio is reshaping the local job and talent market

Online radio outlets added 142 full-time positions in the Wollongong local government area between January and June this year.

The increase coincides with a national lift in digital audio consumption after repeated fixed-line failures, including the Telstra outage that struck 1.2 million customers on 10 July. Employers here now compete directly with Sydney stations for producers, sound engineers and on-air talent who prefer flexible remote shifts.

Local employers step up hiring

Two studios opened new desks this quarter. One sits above the former coal wharf offices on Marine Drive in North Wollongong. The other occupies a converted warehouse on Crown Street Mall next to the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre. Both run daily live streams aimed at shift workers and university students.

The University of Wollongong’s media lab in Gwynneville has already placed 27 graduates into these roles since March. Local training provider TAFE NSW Illawarra started a six-week podcast production short course in May that filled within 48 hours.

Pay and skills data

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on 3 July show median weekly earnings for audio technicians in the Illawarra rose to $1,480, up 9 percent from the same period last year. Job advertisements posted on Seek for Wollongong-based online radio roles now list starting salaries between $78,000 and $92,000, with remote options listed in 68 percent of postings.

Recruiters report the biggest gap remains in live-sound mixing for mobile devices. Companies unable to match city pay are offering four-day weeks and access to the city’s new gigabit fibre loop along Keira Street.

Workers considering a switch should check the current TAFE timetable and register interest directly with the two new Crown Street and Marine Drive studios before the next intake round closes on 31 July.
